Effective Email Marketing Secrets

But, even though there are plenty of low cost and free marketing techniques, you will have to expend plenty of time to maximize your marketing efforts.

One of the most popular forms of advertising a business is email marketing. Email can be a powerful marketing tool, if you know what you’re doing.

No one likes to have spam fill their inbox, and in the United States, spam is illegal, with the Federal Trade Commission going after major spammers. Rather than spamming millions of email addresses, build a list of customers and prospective customers, and market to them.

You can use your email as a marketing tool in a variety of ways. For example, you can create an ezine filled with valuable niche content that your list can actually use. Or, you can send out emails announcing your latest product or service. The key is to make your emails something your list wants and to ensure those emails are not marked as spam.

Email marketing can be somewhat of a challenge because of the prevalence of spam filters in email programs today.

The key to successfully promoting your business with email marketing is to ensure the emails you’re sending out will not be flagged as spam. The best and easiest way to ensure you’re not sending spam is to enlist the help of a service that scans emails to determine whether or not they will be flagged as spam.

To avoid having your email marked as spam, avoid such blacklisted words as ‘buy now’ and ‘free’. But, even if you avoid such words that are considered spam, make sure you use a paid or free service like ezinecheck to ensure your emails are spam free.

In addition, remember that not everyone has high speed internet access. Therefore, if you’re sending out HTML emails, your dialup customers may find the email download takes far too long and won’t take the time to read your email. So, make sure your list has the choice between receiving HTML and plain text emails.

Email marketing can be extremely affective, but don’t overdo it. Only email your list periodically. Once a week, every two weeks, or once a month. If you inundate email inboxes with emails, you’re only going to annoy those people on your list.

Additionally, ensure you personalize each email by using the list member’s name in the heading, and even in the body, of the email.

Finally, email marketing can be a hugely successful method of promotion, if you send directed emails only to those people who have given you permission to email them. The last thing you want is to establish a reputation as a spammer.

Secrets to Successful Email Marketing

If you have decided to use email marketing to further the prospects of your online business, you have to tread very carefully. One little mistake, one little misdemeanor and your email marketing will be labeled as spamming. But if you do not use email marketing at all, you are losing out on the vast potentials that it has in bringing meaningful traffic to your business website. So, the crux of it all is that you have to use email marketing, but use it with the right balance. This is the main mantra of successful email marketing.

There are certainly several strategies that you can use to make your email marketing campaign a roaring hit. The following are some of these strategies.

1. The first thing you will need is to build an opt-in list. What is an opt-in list? Simply put, these are people who have agreed to accept emails from you. When you get this list of people, you are going absolutely legal in sending them emails. Also, since these people have already opted to be in your list, they are probably already interested in what you are selling. That means, there is a strong chance they will be your customers soon. So, how you do you get this opt-in list? One very simple way is to put in checkboxes on your webpage itself asking whether people would like more information from your website to be directly emailed to them. If they are interested in what you are showing them on your webpage, and if they are sure that they have nothing to lose, they will opt in by giving their email ids.

2. Another way to get a list of email leads is offering your visitors something free, to access which they will have to give their email ids. You can use a squeeze page (also known as a lead capture page) for this purpose. It’s simple to do – just put a link for downloading that free gift you are giving, which is probably an eBook. But do not allow people to go directly to the downloading link. Make them go first through a small page known as a squeeze page. Tell them that they will have to give their email ids on this page for verifying that they are real persons. This is truthfully important for you, because there are bots that can be rigged to take the free gifts from you too. Also assure them that their email ids will never be sold for someone else, and that you will only use these email ids to send them informative emails from time to time.

3. Once you get the list of emails, the marketing process itself is simple. Make sure that you send these people emails that are really informative. Give them some information. But to make them open the email you have to use a very compelling subject line. Something like ‘Here are three simple ways that you can beat the heat’. Keep the subject line intriguing so that people go ahead and open the email. In the email, you have to give them the information that you promised in the subject line, or they will feel cheated. Then ask them to visit your website for more such information. Give them the URL of your business website in each email that you write.

4. From time to time, keep testing your email marketing process. You can do this by A/B split testing or multivariate testing. This is where you send different emails to different sets of people and see which email is eliciting the best kind of response. This helps you greatly in improving your email marketing campaign.

The Three Secrets to Profitable Email Marketing

Legitimate email marketing is a great way to stay in touch with your customers and prospects. It’s inexpensive, fast, efficient, and environmentally friendly. Email marketing allows you to target your customers and prospects by their particular interests, it allows you quickly announce special promotions (either planned promotions or impromptu promotions based on changing conditions). Email is the perfect way to send a monthly newsletter. Email marketing’s efficiency was underscored in a study by the Direct Marketing Association which found that in 2005 email marketing returned an amazing $57.25 in revenue per dollar spent on it!

How can you get started with email marketing? Start by collecting your customers’ email addresses. Even if you don’t currently do email marketing, gather your customers’ email addresses now so that, when you decide to start communicating with your customers via email, you’ll already have a good list. Have a sign-up sheet at each of your checkout counters or at your reception desk. Be sure to include a sign-up form on your website. Offer an incentive such as a monthly drawing from the collected email addresses. Be sure to include a privacy statement on your forms and sign-up sheets such as, “Privacy notice: We don’t share your information with anyone.” (Of course, that means you can’t share that information ever.) Remember, email addresses are free (or very inexpensive) to gather.

Now, the three secrets to making email marketing a winner for your business.

Secret number one: Do only “permission-based” email marketing. In other words, only send email to people who have requested your email messages and make it easy to opt-out of future emails. There is a slimy side to email marketing thanks to spammers. Obviously, you want to be associated with the reputable side of email marketing. If a customer, a prospect, or a site visitor willingly provides their email address, you’re not spamming. If you get it any other way, you’re spamming. A commonly used technique for dealing with subscription requests from your website is called a “double-opt-in”. A double-opt-in requires the individual to first request your email marketing, then a confirmation request is sent to their email address. They must click a link in the confirmation email or otherwise confirm their desire to receive your email before they’re added to your list. The rule is simple: If in doubt, don’t send it out.

Secret number two: Make your email marketing messages compelling for the reader. Keep them short and to-the-point and ensure that the recipient will see the value in whatever you’re saying. Increasingly, people are becoming distrustful of “hypie” messages that sound like they were written by an advertising copy writer. Make your message real, make it personal, and make it deliver a benefit from the readers’ perspective. If there’s nothing in it for them, they’ll just delete your message or possibly even report it as spam.

Secret number three: Be consistent. Whether you choose to send an email campaign every week, every month, or every quarter, be consistent. One very successful email marketer even includes these words at the top of every email he sends: “Sent the third Tuesday of every month…” Your consistency in your marketing efforts reflects your dependability as a company.

What about the mechanics of email marketing? Many very small businesses just use their regular email accounts. Such a solution can work, but it doesn’t scale well as your email list and business grow. It also requires you to manage your new subscribers and unsubscribe requests. A better solution is to use a commercial email marketing service. Such companies provide templates to make your messages look professional. They also provide tracking information on how many messages were actually opened and read, automatic opt-out links on your marketing messages, tutorials, assistance in complying with the CAN-SPAM act, and more. Costs start at about $10 per month and go up from there based on various criteria such as the size of your list and the frequency with which you send messages. Most such companies provide a free trial period so you can get familiar with their service. There are many email marketing companies, but here are three for you to consider: iContact (www.icontact.com), GetResponse (www.getresponse.com), and Constant Contact (www.constantcontact.com).

Make sure you’re compliant with the CAN-SPAM act. Of course, this is not legal advice (I’m no lawyer!), but compliance means being honest in your subject lines about the content of the message, including an easy opt-out method in every message, and including your complete contact information in every message.

Regardless of how you decide to do your email marketing, now is the time to start gathering email addresses. Email marketing, done properly, is flexible, affordable, efficient, and potentially very profitable for your business.
